Seriousness through design

Current political developments in Europe and in the US remind us that the separation of powers is an essential foundation for our democracy. But what about the separation of powers in the world of media; with publishers and journalists, advertisement and PR, customers and readers? Today, this separation no longer exists, resulting in distortions with the following negative effects: serious media are labelled as Lügenpresse (“lying press”), newspapers see their print runs decline, few readers want to pay for digital journalism, advertisements are being blocked, bloggers and Youtubers mix up editorial work and promotion. Jürgen Siebert – a journalist, typographer, and conference director at Monotype – invites art directors (Henning Skibbe, Maud Radtke and others) to discuss the power of the written word, trust by design, and a new form of presentation for the old media.
