YOW! West speakers include:

Damian Conway is a well-known member of the international Perl community. A widely sought-after speaker and teacher, he is also the author of several technical books as well as numerous Perl software modules. Damian runs an international IT training company - Thoughtstream - which provides programmer training from beginner to masterclass level throughout Europe, North America, and Australasia. Until 2011 he was also an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University. Over the past decade most of this spare time has been spent working with Larry Wall on the design and promotion of the new Perl 6 programming language.

Presentation: Everything You Know About Regexes Is WrongFor most programmers, regular expressions are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma shrouded in line-noise. So most sensible programmers either don't use them at all or else they fall back on an "evolutionary programming" approach: find an existing regex that looks like it might do, then randomly permute its "genome" over and over again until it appears to work. In this talk Damian will go back to basics and discover what regexes really are and see how normal programmers can make use of their existing software development skills to construct correct and efficient regexes...without selling their souls or losing their minds.
Fred George is a developer and cofounder at Outpace Systems, and has been writing code for over 46 years in (by his count) over 70 languages. He has delivered projects and products across his career, and in the last decade alone, has worked in the US, India, China, and the UK. He started ThoughtWorks University in Bangalore, India, based on a commercial programming training program he developed in the 90’s. An early adopter of OO and Agile, Fred continues to impact the industry with his leading edge ideas, most recently advocating MicroService Architectures and flat team structures (under the moniker of Programmer Anarchy). Oh, and he still writes code!

Presentation: Agile Roots: Use JIT to Go FasterWhen eXtreme Programming (XP) appeared, it advocated delivering value in 23 week cycles, the most aggressive of all the early Agile methodologies. Today Fred sees environments where a single developer may be deploying into production twice a day! This acceleration of nearly two orders of magnitude is not really surprising with the benefits it gives a business. Architecture and processes are enablers of this acceleration. But more often than not, they serve as inhibitors of the acceleration. In this talk we will peel back the processes and architectures of the ultrafast delivery shops and contrast those to the status quo of most shops. We do this through real experiences in real companies, too! Sprinkled throughout the presentation are practical tidbits to help your shop be a little quicker.

Kevin Lynagh is a Portland, Oregon-based designer and computerist. He has designed software for wind turbine technicians, bioinformaticians, meteorologists, and manufacturers of hipster housewares.

Presentation: Using ClojureScript w/ heavy industrial equipment
Keming Labs was commissioned by a client in the energy sector to design and build a custom heavy-equipment inspection tool. The tool was designed with Harel Statecharts and implemented with ClojureScript running on an Android device. In this talk, Kevin will discuss this approach; in particular, how explicit immutable data yielded fast, on-device prototyping, easy-to-implement visual testing tools, and improved cohesion between developers, designers, and the end customers.
