Young Coastal Science and Engineering Conference 2020 - Postponed.

Mar 29 - 30, 2021 · Dorset, United Kingdom

Bournemouth University appreciates that the coronavirus (or COVID-19) pandemic is a cause for concern for students, colleagues and the wider BU community. The welfare of our staff, students and visitors is the university’s highest priority and since early January we have been continuously monitoring the situation and liaising closely with Public Health England (PHE) and acting in line with their latest advice at all times.

Based on this advice, the university has taken the decision to postpone all university events until at least 1 May. We recognise that this may be disappointing, but believe it necessary to help keep our community safe.

Therefore, this event will be postponed until further notice. We will review a possible rescheduled date in due course and contact you again once we have further details.

Thank you for your interest in Bournemouth University.

Date & Time - Monday 6 April 2020 09:00 - 7 April 15:30

About YCSEC 2020

Bournemouth University is pleased to host the 16th Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference (YCSEC) on the 6th-7th April 2020. The YCSEC provides a unique opportunity for early-career coastal scientists and engineers, working in academia (including PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers) and industry, to showcase their work and network with peers from a variety of disciplines concerned with the coastal environment. We welcome abstract submissions on a range of topics, including but not limited to: ecological engineering; management of flooding and erosion risks; climate change impacts and adaptation; marine renewables; modelling coastal processes; effects of pollution and others.

YCSEC provides a unique opportunity for leading young coastal scientists and engineers working in academia and industry, to present their work and network with their peers. The conference will have oral and poster presentations, keynote talks, and plenty of opportunities to network and socialise, including during the field trip along Bournemouth seafront guided by an engineer from the local council and the conference dinner on Monday evening. For more information and the programme, check the conference website:

Post-conference workshop

Attendees have the opportunity to attend the (optional) workshop ‘Challenges and Opportunities for Eco-engineering on the Coast’ after the conference close (Tuesday 7th April 15.30-17.00), also hosted at Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus.

The workshop will start with presentations about innovative eco-engineering trials from existing projects (e.g. followed by an activity focused on resolving challenges faced by engineers and developers interested in applying eco-engineering.

There is no additional cost to attend the workshop but only 20 places will be available on a first-come first-serve basis. You can book a place in this workshop when you purchase your conference ticket but please cancel your booking if you change plans, so the place can be offered to someone else.

Who Should Attend?

This conference welcomes early-career researchers (MSc and PhD Students, postdoctoral researchers) and professionals from the public and private sectors working on or interested on coastal sciences and engineering. The conference attracts an interdisciplinary audience to promote research-practice connections.

Not all of us are ‘young’ and there is no age restriction for attendance at this conference.

Why attend?

YCSEC provides a welcoming environment to showcase and discuss current and innovative coastal research and practices.
