Working With The Homeless (mini meetup)

Nov 4, 2009 · Greater London, United Kingdom

We are holding a joint mini meetup in partnership with The Sock Mob to look at the problem of homelessness, its scale, its impact and the good work some organisations like the Sock Mob are doing. . Homelessness is a universal signifier of marginalisation, worldwide 'phenomenon', and has to be taken seriously. Many of the homeless are 'invisible' homeless and many are the new migrants/refugees. The homeless suffer the psychology of isolation, loneliness and alienation and this can underpin a host of social ills. The development of Social enterprise is a way of giving the homeless ownership over their skills and fates. For example The Sock mob are working with The London Bridge Festival to train homeless people to be tour guides for that festival. Speakers at this meeting will be Lidija Mavra who is the organizer of The Sock mob Marina who is the assistant organiser of The Sock mob The Sock Mob provides people with the tools and confidence to engage with the homeless and by so doing help them re-engage with the 'mainstream' and break the barrier between 'them' and 'us' David Barker has created a social enterprise that has a commitment to poverty reduction through the generation of sustainable employment opportunities for 16-19 year olds not in education, employment and training (NEETs) as well as other unemployed men and women facing obstacles in finding that one job that can end their dependence on benefits and help them break away from a vicious cycle of unemployment and poverty. Many of these are homeless. He will tell us about how social enterprise can make a difference This meeting is being hosted by Host Universal who have offered their meeting room in the centre of Piccadilly for some of our mini meetups.
