Our June 2019 meet-up speaker is Dr. Julie Chih-yu Chen, a Research Biologist and Data Scientist with the Public Health Agency of Canada.
In her work at the National Microbiology Laboratory located in Winnipeg, Dr. Chen collaborates with biological researchers, and applies Data Science on proteomics and genomics datasets to tackle biological questions such as bacterial phenotypes, host response from infection and the predictability of immune diseases from fecal microbiome.
Dr. Chen's Data Science expertise in statistics and machine learning has been applied to tackle a variety of biological hypotheses. These analytical approaches are largely driven by her training in both analytical science and molecular biology.
Presentation: Omics Data Science: Computational Investigation of Biomedical Sciences
With the rise of large biological (omics) data, bioinformatics and Data Science have gained its place of importance in biomedical research. In this meetup, we will discuss the applications of unsupervised and supervised machine learning (as well as deep learning) to omics data in the biomedical field.
Dr. Julie Chih-yu Chen is a Computational Biologist and Bioinformatician, currently working as a Data Scientist with the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Julie Chen holds a M.Sc. in Cells & Systems Biology from The University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from The University of British Columbia.
Julie's research projects in graduate school involved Data Science application on genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenomics data to understand the regulation of gene expression. This work contributed to the understanding of mis-regulation in diseases, stem cells and sex differences at molecular level, as well as gene therapy design.
