Leon Hewitt - When Good Code Goes Bad
We all have the best of intentions when writing code. We have all read the books, listened to the podcasts and practised the katas. So why is almost every code base we encounter difficult to maintain and time consuming to extend? This talk will explore some possible reasons why this happens despite all the best practices we as engineers follow and offer some ideas on how we may avoid this in the future.
About the speaker:
Leon Hewitt has been a software engineer for around 20 years. He was an early adopter of extreme programming and has spent most of his career wrestling with legacy code bases. He finds the best way to solve any problem is to begin by making a strong, hot cup of tea.
Fanny Demey - How to use Android/iOS native code in a React Native app
Do you fear that the current React Native ecosystem doesn’t fit your needs? Or maybe you already have native apps and want to reuse part of your code while moving to React Native?
React Native offers a better future for hybrid apps by wrapping its native components. It’s really easy to create native modules in android or iOS, and to use them in a React Native app. In this lightning talk, we will discover how to create a native module with React Native, with a concrete use case: downloading a music playlist for offline playback. We will use Kotlin and Objective-C for that. Fanny will share with you our experience with React Native at 7digital, what we’ve learnt, why we prefer React Native to Cordova, and what could be improved.
About the speaker:
Fanny (@FannyDemey) is a mobile developer at 7digital Lille. She is also leading the Google Developer Group in Lille, where she organises meetups and conferences.
Doors open at 6:45pm for networking, drinks and pizza. The talks start promptly at 7:00pm.
