ABSTRACT: Supply chains have struggled to cope with ever-increasing expectations from consumers, market volatility and geopolitical uncertainties over the recent years. The rigidity and complexity in supply chains, which were originally designed to create efficiency, have turned them fragile and lacking resilience under the new global conditions. They also pose severe roadblocks against achieving sustainability goals by hindering the switch to greener materials, regionalization, and circular economies. Production and supply of goods and services need to be unchained and rearchitected for a new digitized, sustainable, and resilient world.
Data and artificial intelligence (AI) are very potent instruments for unchaining supply chains. They bring visibility, monitoring, and interpretability at massive scales without the rules-based rigidity of the old world by collecting and analyzing supply chain events across the world. They deliver goal-driven discovery of new relationships between products, vendors, and consumers in a much broader and resilient manner than traditional enterprise resource planning (ERP) approaches. Such a fabric of extended intelligence engaging fluidly with people and products is shaping the future of supply unchained.
