Afshin Mehin was born in Vancouver to Iranian parents, earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of British Columbia in 2002, and a Masters degree in Industrial Design from The Royal College of Art in 2004. He began his career as an industrial designer in San Francisco and, after spending 8 years gaining valuable experience working with prestigious designers - both in UK and US - he returned to Canada. In 2012 Mehin founded WOKE, a boutique design agency specializing in rethinking the design of today’s smart products, interfaces and environments.
As today’s products become more interconnected and intelligent, it is vital for designers to not only design beautiful products but also the elegant interfaces that create a holistic user experience. As a studio rooted in both product and interaction design, WOKE practices a special blend of design that enable the studio to address these challenges in an agile and impactful way. The studio’s designs involve merging compelling user insights, considered interactions and iconic forms to create impactful solutions.
Recent work includes Recon Jet - the first generation of interactive sunglasses for sports and high-intensity environments that incorporates HUD (heads-up display) technology, and Tzoa - a wearable enviro-tracker that measures personal air quality and UV exposure, set to launch in late November of this year.
Afshin's prior experience to founding WOKE includes reknowned international firms such as: BarberOsgerby and StudioConran in London, IDEO and Whipsaw in San Francisco, and the M.I.T. Media Lab Europe in Dublin. He was responsible for designing products and interactions for leading companies like; LG, Samsung, Western Digital, Renault, Hyundai, Kia, and the 2012 London Olympics. @afmehin
Quin Sandler is a co-founder of Plantiga, makers of connected performance apparel. Their first product is Tiga™, an ergonomic, app-connected footwear insert that measures, in real-time, gait, balance, stability, posture and more. He has been a serial entrepreneur for much of his life, founding both Keystone Learning - a developer of propriety teaching techniques for learning challenged children; and the Principal Design Group, a branding and identity start-up aimed at the entertainment and hospitality industries. He has a passion for design, product development, mobility and music. @quinsandler
Kharis O'Connell has over 10 years of international experience in crafting holistic and thoughtful products and services, most recently working at Nokia Design on a multitude of different design projects. Previous works included projects for clients like Samsung, Vodafone and Nike. A keen creative technologist, he continuously strives for design excellence and enjoys discovering the devil in the details. Outside of design Kharis is also one of the founders of Wearable Wednesday Vancouver, an event that is dedicated to exploring the impact of technology on humankind. @rmtwrkr
