One of the hardest lessons to embrace in web development is that not everyone is like you. There are people out there with poor devices, slow data connections and with a lack of knowledge when it comes to computers. What’s the proper way to cater those types of people?
That will be the main topic at the upcoming Tinel Meetup with our guest Charlie Owen, frontend developer at Springer Nature. How someone interacts with your site is completely out of your control, and this talk will show you the many ways your assumptions can fail. But it will also show how coding empathically with this in mind will let you produce sites that are usable for everyone.
Her talk, scheduled for the 22nd of February is named “Dear developer, it isn’t about you” and it will demonstrate how you haven’t got the luxury of assuming that everyone is like you. Charlie started her career back in 2012 and it didn’t take her too long to become noticed in London, soon enough she was writing code for the front page of BBC News. Next stop was moving to Berlin, where she tried a few companies like Bitcrowd, before settling in at Springer Nature, focusing on Frontend Development. There she helps make the world of scientific publishing a better place by constructing design systems, banging on about inclusive design, and utilizing web standards. The agenda for the upcoming Tinel Meetup #9 is as follows:
18:00 — 18:30 The gathering
18:30 — 18:45 Opening remarks: Duje Senta (Locastic)
19:00 — 20:00 Charlie Owen: “Dear Developer, it isn’t about you”
20:00 — QA, discussion, networking
Do you need more convincing? All topics last year covered a vast range of subjects, points of view, and a few case studies. We hope that whatever your role may be, you can find something to relate to. This time around, the event is catered to all developers, so don’t forget to confirm your spot at the event.
Traditionally, our partners will provide beers, pizza, and cakes and you can even enjoy your discounted ride back home with Uber. See you at the Locastic office in Split.
