next PyData Lisbon Meetup is already around the corner: Wednesday, 13th December! Once again it will take place at the HQ of our parters from Beta-i, located at Avenida Casal Ribeiro 28, 8th floor,[masked] Lisbon.
Greetings & intro
First talk: Machine learning optimisation in a data-driven operational context: aerial line inspection at EDP
Data scientists, exploring the depths and pushing the boundaries of the amazing data-infused world we live in, may lose sight of the real-world application of their work, to life-saving everyday problems faced by ‘old-school’ companies such as electrical utilities. EDP performs aerial power line inspections using helicopters and drones, in order to identify operational risks and reduce the potential for outages. LIDAR and cameras are used to collect data, which must then be classified (manually at first), leading to lengthy lead times for results to be produced. In this talk, EDP’s Data Leap team will share how they built a machine learning model to automate power line inspection data classification and significantly reduce processing time, while expanding the quality of the outcome produced.
Marco Pinheiro and Pedro Daniel Ferreira are respectively a Data Scientist and a Software Engineer working at EDP Inovação in the Data Leap team, applying AI and cutting-edge tech to everyday business problems such as power plant vibrations, wind turbine lifetime assessments, cybersecurity alarms and asset maintenance.
Break (drinks & snacks)
Community PitchesCommunity members are welcome to introduce themselves and share their experiences. If you would like to give a lightning pitch please get in touch.
Second talk: How to Build a Simple Recommender System in Python
Recommender systems use data to predict the preference of a user for a given item. They are widely used by companies such as Amazon, Spotify and, well, Uniplaces! In this talk, you will learn how to build a simple recommender system from scratch using Python, employing content-based and collaborative-filtering techniques. You will also get a few pointers on what you could do to improve your system going forward.
Maria Dominguez, Data Scientist @ Uniplaces and Lead Gardener @ home. Wants to put machines working so people can have fun and João Ascensão, Head of Data @ Uniplaces. Both teach at the Lisbon Data Science Starters Academy.
Drinks & snacks Looking forward to seeing you there!
