The Path To Development -Trade or Aid (mini meetup)

Mar 3, 2010 · Greater London, United Kingdom

Please note the last minute change of venue. The new venue is only 7 minutes from the old! When we talk of the “developing world” and what can be done to provide sustainable life styles then the debate over trade and aid comes to the forefront. We are holding a mini meetup on this subject during Fair Trade fortnight to address some of the issues of this debate. Leading this discussion will be Sally Reith from Shared Interest. Shared Interest is a co-operative lending society that aims to reduce poverty in the world by providing fair and just financial services. They work with fair trade businesses all over the world, both producers and buyers, providing credit to help them trade and develop. Sally and Shared Interest strongly believe that trade is the right way for development. Bunmi Williams. Bunmi believes that development has to be not just about aid or trade but also the development of both leadership and social enterprise. She quotes that ‘Social Enterprise is more than just another good business concept, it evokes every man to all but think of how they too can be a great change agent, impacting mankind and leaving legacies that will sustain for generations.’ Bunmi sees social enterprise as a development tool for developing countries, enabling people to search internally to retrieve the answers for their social ills without being dependant on aid or external help. People voicing out what they see and how they want it tackled is fundamental towards development and maturity. International aid agencies attract more donations from the public than any other charitable cause, beating cancer, children's and animal charities. But international aid and development is also one of the most hotly debated areas of the voluntary sector, operating in a highly politicised context. The actions of aid agencies, their perceived independence - or lack of it - from governments, their management and efficiency are all under the spotlight as never before. Trade & Aid are hot topics in the area of development and important issues for all of us in the 21st century. This meeting has been sponsored by Shared Interest We are grateful for their help and support.
