The Olympics - Sustaining The Spirit As A Lasting Legacy

Aug 16, 2012 · Greater London, United Kingdom

GlobalNet21 is co-operating with the Global Summit in developing webinars and running workshops around the theme of the legacy of the Olympics and whether the spirit generated can be focused on developing a more sustainable world. THE GLOBAL SUMMIT is a social, economic and environmental forum discussing solutions that could benefit the greatest number of beings and bringing them into contact with those who have the power to help bring them into being.
During the Summit we will have helped develop four webinars and two workshops - one on PhotoJournalism and how that can capture the spirit of the Olympics and one on CitizenVideo and how that medium can be used to engage and inform people so they have a voice on the public square.
This will culminate in a meeting and dialogue on August 16th where we will discuss whether the spirit of the Olympics can be focused on creating the energy for a sustainable future. Can there be a regenerative legacy for the Olympics in the East End but also globally because of the opportunity that the Olympics has given to bring people together on a global scale.
To help us develop this discussion around creating a lasting legacy will be two organisations that we are working with and who are running workshops at the event. They will present some of the material produced in their workshops as a focus for a discussion on the spirit of legacy. They are,
PhotoVoice who is the world leader in the field of participatory photography. PhotoVoice delivers projects in the UK and internationally that help to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and, bridge divides in society. They will look at qualities and values’ of the Olympics, and the potential benefits they could bring to UK society if sustained.
VisionOntv is an organisation that aims for the widest possible distribution of video for social change. It enables you to create and collate video: they create shows to put news in context, and collate the best social change video from around the world. They also curate it so that it can be found and enjoyed easily by anyone who wants to. They will involve people in developing video vignettes in their workshop and community dialogue and will use this in this evening meeting to look at how the new media can be used to sustain the spirit of the Olympics.
