Tim Van Lier | VRT
In this presentation I will discuss some lessons learned from case studies like Radio +, deredactie mobiel, … as well as bring some more personal stories on how we are experimenting with lean and agile principles at VRT to make products together with our users. These different experiences have spurred questions about concepts like ‘the user’, ‘sprint 0’, ‘lean startup’ and different roles of people involved in online product design. My main concern, therefore, is currently with trying to find out why, how and when to introduce ‘users' in the agile development process for, in the end, we are all striving to 'put the people first'...
Tim is product owner of the mobile newsproducts of the VRT (Sporza & deredactie.be). His job is to work on a vision on mobile news delivery and together with his team to work towards the right MVP using an agile and lean approach.
Tim has a background in user research having worked on several projects for the media research group iMinds-SMIT in the early stages of his professional life. Eager to put theory into practice he then started his career at the VRT, working as a digital adviser on several digital products including Ketnet, Radioplus, a number of mobile applications and, since last year, the mobile news products. Some of his major concerns are to always put the user first and to take innovative approaches to the development process. Outside his professional life, he enjoys movies and sports and likes to spend time with his family.
Are you a scientist or a chef?
Cas Lemmens | Spotify
Both scientists and chefs are creative people. Both professions require sufficient knowledge of a craft, they require the ability to solve problems and to create beautiful recipes. But yet, where scientist aim to acquire knowledge and try to define and improve generic behaviour, chefs aim to create their own taste and build their own brand. As a UX designer, we often have to switch between being a scientist and being a chef. When should we be the scientist, and when the chef? And what does it take to be a good scientific designer as well as a design chef?
Cas looks after the mobile platform at Spotify, where he keeps an eye on the overall quality that gets released as well as improving the design language and platform consistency. Prior to Spotify, Cas worked as a Creative Technologist and Information Architect for agencies in Antwerp and London after graduating from Hyper Island as an Interactive Art Director. When he's not working, you can find him in the recording studio, behind the decks or running around a Swedish island.
