This presentation will focus on Best Practices in Software Re-engineering, and will briefly review the business case for re-engineering as opposed to rebuilding. It will include an in depth discussion of technical best practices for quality injection and re-engineering of an existing system. Re-engineering an existing system is more cost effective than a complete rewrite for several reasons. Some estimates say a 30% savings can be realized over the cost of building the system from scratch. However, re-engineering a system to update the architecture and inject current testing and structure methodologies requires a different approach. The new infrastructure must be put in place in such a way that the system is continually available and no new bugs are introduced in the process, while allowing both old and new code to benefit from the updated architecture.
