Sharks Unite: DigitalOcean Peer Lab (Hacktoberfest Edition!)

Oct 12, 2017 · Philadelphia, United States of America

DigitalOcean Peer Lab

Here's the idea: come join other developers for a peer-based collaborative learning lab. Developers gather in a physical space to work on things. You've got a question? Ask the group, maybe someone can provide you with some insight. Maybe you can help someone else with their questions. Bring a laptop and some code to work on.

“When one person teaches, two people learn.” Teaching is an incredibly rewarding experience, whether it’s in a classroom setting or just helping someone debug some code. We all start somewhere, and interacting with developers at different points in their careers helps encourage empathy for each other. The best designs, tests and implementations are created in a more social context, and peer labs encourage participants to interact as much as they like.

There will be plenty of mob and pair programming, but plenty of spaces to hack on your own too!

Each Peer Lab might feature a few “lightning talks” — short demos or presentations: no powerpoints, all code. Want to present a lightning talk? Just come prepared and sign up at the event you want to present or get in touch!

Hacktoberfest 2017 Edition!

Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software that awards a limited edition T-shirt to participants who open four pull requests (PRs) during the month of October. Pull requests do not need to be merged to earn your T-shirt, only opened between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31. Sign up here.

This is a great chance to get started with open source! We’ll be hacking on “Good First Tasks” from popular open source projects like React, Jest, VS Code, Snorkel, and more!

A special thank you to our sponsor, Elsevier Inc., for a space to collaborate and finally fix the failing test.

Elsevier is a technology and analytics company focused on empowering science and healthcare worldwide. Elsevier is the fourth largest data provider in the world, behind Google, China Mobile and Bloomberg. Fun fact: Elsevier's parent company RELX owns ComicCon and LexisNexis!

Elsevier is headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and has offices worldwide, including the newly renovated Center City Philadelphia office where we will be hosting our peer labs. Elsevier is currently hiring; if you're interested in a career you can apply here and you can learn more about Elsevier here.

A special welcome from Matt Morgis, your DigitalOcean Philadelphia Meetup Co-Organizer

We'd love your feedback on how we can make this meet up more valuable to you! Want this on a Saturday morning with great local coffee instead of a week night with wine and beer? Tell us what days, times, talks, demos, foods, drinks, etc., you'd like to see at upcoming meet ups — share your ideas in the Suggestion Box. Anyone interested in giving a lightning talk is welcome to submit a talk proposal. And if you'd like to help co-organize/host future meet ups, apply here.
