Alan Blythe: An Introduction to Scalability Concepts and Principles
We’ve all had someone look at a solution and ask “Is that scalable?” The answer depends on the domain or industry you work in as scalability means different things in different domains. A common narrow view of a scalable system is a system that can handle 1m web requests but the topic is broader than that. Designs and decisions for scalability are often seen with a myopic view, limiting choices. During this talk we’ll spend some time exploring some of the driving principles such as contention, consistency, atomicity, and concurrency. We’ll also explore some of the concepts and techniques to achieve a scalable system including stateless architectures, message queuing, caching, and scale up vs scale out to name a few.
Alan Blythe leads the Platform Services group at UniKey Technologies. He’s used his passions for building transactional and scalable systems in the financial, telecommunications and consumer electronics industries. When not working he’s either running or spending time with his wife, 3 kids, and 2 huskies.
Gabriel Babilonia: Dotnet For Everyone
Dotnet is no longer the forbidden framework used by only largely funded enterprise development teams.
Dotnet has evolved quite a bit in the past 3 years with the shift in Microsoft to open source the Dotnet Core libraries, and the new cross-platform capabilities that Dotnet Core now offers with Docker. Dotnet is no longer the forbidden framework used by only largely funded enterprise development teams. In this talk we'll try to break the status quo surrounding the Dotnet community. We will also be taking a look at a demo on building a Restful API using ASP.NET Web API, Visual Code, dotnet CLI and running it on a Linux environment using a Docker container!
Gabriel is a Developer in the Orlando area working for a global logistics company. He has a passion for all things .NET, Angular and generally loves to chat about CS related topics! When not developing, he tends to relax at home with his pup and watch re-runs of Dragon Ball Z.
