[R-Meds] Nonlinear models with R

A new interest group for R users in the healthcare field is meeting on Thursday September 5, 2019, at the Center for Health Informatics (5th floor, TRW Building, 3280 Hospital Dr NW, Calgary)!

The door opens at 5:30 pm with pizza and soda for networking. The meeting starts by Dr. Catherine Eastwood with a brief introduction of CHI and R-Meds. Dr. Lee is contributing to a meeting this month speaking about nonlinear models using R.

A nonlinear model is an important tool used to describe the complex nature of observations which are not adequately explained by a linear model in medical and biomedical engineering research. An introduction to the use of nonlinear models with R will be provided. In the first session (40 mins), we cover the following: 1. choosing good candidate nonlinear models, 2. estimating parameters (and choice of starting values), 3. checking model assumptions, and 4. summarizing results from the model. In the second session (30 mins), key R functions are introduced and outputs are visualized step-by-step using nlme package. Extension to data with repeated measurements will be discussed if time permits.
