"Queen's own Orange Grove" - walk by Big Olive

Nov 21, 2015 · Athens, Greece

Our ramble begins with an overview of the 19th century urban plans and delves deeper into the less known history and narratives of the Royal palace and its gardens. Our discussion concentrates on the archetypes of western landscape and gardening as featured in the garden's meandering pathways and orangeries. Over the course of the walk we will cross paths with less known landmarks and trivia, such as the exotic “Washingtonian” trees, the distinct “curiosités” inside the garden, the favourite hill of queen Amalia, the mosaic floor of a Roman villa and the grotto with the “green-room”.
“ It remains in my memory like no other park I have known. It is the quintessence of a park, the thing one feels sometimes in looking at a canvas or dreaming of a place one would like to be in and never finds.” - Henry Miller about the National Garden, 1939.
