Philly New Tech Meetup #51 - June 2018 -- DNA Breaches

Jun 20, 2018 · Philadelphia, United States of America

Ripped from the headlines!

We’ve all seen the news reports on data breaches and how they lead to identity theft – your usernames have been stolen, your usernames and passwords have been stolen, your usernames, passwords and credit card numbers have been stolen! But what happens when your very YOU has been stolen?

A few weeks ago, reported having 92 million users data compromised There are conflicting reports on what was leaked but this is a company that stores info on your DNA – the very YOU of YOU.

Genetic information is unlike any other. It is uniquely personal, revealing intimate aspects of our physical makeup. Even more concerning, it reveals similar secrets for a range of people who do not even know it was collected – our relatives. Therefore, when we donate information to a genetic database, we are effectively consenting for many others. The information also raises difficult questions of ownership. Genetic databases have tremendous value for clinical care, research, and marketing – and the potential for vast profits.

These concerns require special legal and ethical treatment, but existing laws and ethical analyses have not been up to the task. This talk will address those concerns and the legal and ethical gaps that require attention.

We are lucky enough to have one of the foremost experts in the field right down the street at Drexel University -- Dr. Robert Field -- and he will be with us to discuss the legal, ethical and scope of breaches when they impact us at the cellular level.

Thank you and please update your RSVPs! Innovation Centers will be rescheduled later in the year.
