NYC Java + Semantic Web Joint Meetup - AllegroGraph & Updates on Clojure

Mar 19, 2009 · New York, United States of America

This is a joint meeting with the New York Semantic Web Meetup! PLEASE NOTE: if you previously RSVP'd for this meeting on the previous listing you must RSVP again here on this listing. Special Guest Speakers: Dr. Jans Aasman: Geo-Temporal and Social Network Reasoning with AllegroGraph Rich Hickey: Updates on Clojure Updates on Clojure - Rich Hickey Clojure is a dynamic programming language that targets the Java Virtual Machine. It is designed to be a general-purpose language, combining the approachability and interactive development of a scripting language with an efficient and robust infrastructure for multithreaded programming. Clojure is a compiled language - it compiles directly to JVM bytecode, yet remains completely dynamic. Every feature supported by Clojure is supported at runtime. Clojure provides easy access to the Java frameworks, with optional type hints and type inference, to ensure that calls to Java can avoid reflection. Clojure is a dialect of Lisp, and shares with Lisp the code-as-data philosophy and a powerful macro system. Clojure is predominantly a functional programming language, and features a rich set of immutable, persistent data structures. When mutable state is needed, Clojure offers a software transactional memory system and reactive Agent system that ensure clean, correct, multithreaded designs. Geo-Temporal and Social Network Reasoning with AllegroGraph - Dr. Jans Aasman AllegroGraph RDFStore is a modern, high-performance, persistent RDF graph database for Java applications. AllegroGraph uses disk-based storage, enabling it to scale to billions of triples while maintaining superior performance. AllegroGraph supports SPARQL, RDFS++, and Prolog reasoning from Java applications. Enterprises have begun utilizing semantic technologies and standards for knowledge representation, knowledge access and discovery. Combining this with GeoTemporal and Social Networking analytics is the next stage of Business Intelligence in the Enterprise. In our presentation we will focus primarily on the new temporal logic and spatial primitives in AllegroGraph. Rich Hickey Bio: Rich Hickey, the author of Clojure, is an independent software designer, consultant and application architect with over 20 years of experience in all facets of software development. Rich has worked on scheduling systems, broadcast automation, audio analysis and fingerprinting, database design, yield management, exit poll systems, and machine listening, in a variety of languages. Dr. Jans Aasman Bio: Franz's President and CEO, a longtime customer, joined Franz from TNO Telecom based in The Netherlands. His previous experience and educational background include: # KPN Research, the research lab of the major Dutch telecommunication company. # Tenured Professor in Industrial Design at the Technical University of Delft. Title of the chair: Informational Ergonomics of Telematics and Intelligent Products. # Carnegie Mellon University. Visiting Scientist at the Computer Science Department of Prof. Dr. Alan Newell. # Researcher at the Traffic Research Center of the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). # Experimental and cognitive psychology at the University of Groningen, specialization: Psychophysiology, Cognitive Psychology. # Bachelors title Philosophy
