NLHTML5 presents Niels Leenheer & Jessica Rose @ Nerds & Company!

Mar 17, 2016 · Enschede, Netherlands

On March 17th, Nerds & Company will be the host of our third meetup of 2016!

At this meetup, Jessica Rose (Trans*Code) will talk about helping new developers into tech and Niels Leenheer (HTML5Test) will tell you about lying browsers!

“If you focus on your culture, the rest will follow.” Nerds & Company is a culture driven organisation. Our belief is that if you get the culture right, most other things, like great products and customer service will follow naturally. It is this vision that we strive to follow at all times. From our point of view, Nerds are the heroes that make the difference in this day and age. The company supports them in every possible way to help them make the most out of their careers. Our 40 employees are driven to make the best work of their life at Nerds & Company. We want to make the world a little bit better everyday through digital solutions. Brands such as Unilever, McDonalds, Apollo Vredestein, UWV, FC Twente, KvK, Asito, RMMBR, RRS and KWS profit from this level of quality and mentality.

Everybody lies - Niels Leenheer

This is talk about browser sniffing. And yes, I do realise it is 2016. I know browser sniffing is ugly and we should all be using feature detection. But a quick search on Github still shows millions of lines of code referring to user agents strings. So this message clearly hasn’t landed yet. But why is browser sniffing a bad choice? This talk will dive into history and show the origin of the user agent string and the hidden battle between browser makers and web developers. It will show its simple beginnings and the horrible monstrosity it has become.

About Niels

Niels is a self-professed browser geek. He runs one of the largest Open Device Labs in the world and is the creator of HTML5test.com. A couple of years ago he needed a browser sniffing library for HTML5test, and because existing libraries were not any good, he created one by himself - WhichBrowser. A decision he regrets to this very day.

Build Newbies, Ship Change - Jessica Rose

Not happy with the face of your local tech scene? The fastest way to shape your local community is to teach or support enthusiastic newbies. While we’ll look at some of the great mentorship and teaching programs that are available now, you don’t have to limit yourself to existing programs to start helping out. We’ll look at field tested routes to support new programmers that fit a range of different commitment levels. With enough of us helping out, we can change the face of our industry, as well as our local tech communities.

About Jessica

Jessica Rose is a self taught technologist obsessed with working to foster more equal access to technical education and digital spaces. She's currently working with DreamFactory to help them better reach developer communities with their open source project. She’s also founded the Open Code meetup series and co-founded Trans*Code. She’s always interested in hearing about your newest project so come find her for a chat.
