Title: Digital Twin: A virtual copy of reality
Description: Talking about IoT often also refers to the linking of the virtual and physical worlds. In order to access physical devices from the virtual world we need some helpers to connect those worlds together. This can be realized using digital twins. Using those enables us to retrieve the current state and also change it without needing physical access to the device. In this way, virtual structures can be modeled and data can be linked with each other.

In this talk we want to show a concrete example of how power consumption in a city can be modelled and queried by using Azure Digital Twins. Based on this graph we can generate insights on the eletrical grid and its surroundings and relations to analyze and optimize on cost.

Not only can digital twins deliver innovation, connectivity, productivity, and efficiency gains across many sectors, they can also help to overcome social and economic exclusion.

Following the life-cycle of one machine, we will show how digital twins can be employed to support sustainable development, and more in particular circular economy.

Title: Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Lifecycle Assessment – an Enabler for Sustainable Construction of Real Estate by Kilian

Description: The construction and real estate sector account for aproximately 38% of global CO2 emissions. Therefore the reduction is an important political and social goal. The emergence of digital twin technology in construction offers an opportunity to connect social goals with economic necessity. The construction industry, being a late starter in digitization, now has accelerated, using the broad integration of computer aided design (CAD) as a starting point for developing a digital twin approach for the lifecycle of buildings. Simulation of different materials used with regard to circularity enable sustainability-focused decision making, within the design or engineering phase of the construction process.
