Metaphors We Compute By - Guest Lecture at FH Salzburg
Alvaro Videla has been teaching "Scalable Web Architectures" at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences for 5 years now. The course itself is only open to Master students of MultiMediaTechnology. But he will also give a public guest lecture that is open to all:
Metaphors We Compute By
In the book Metaphors We Live By, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson showed that metaphor permeates all areas of our lives, and in particular that metaphor dictates how we understand the world, how we act in it, how we live in it. In this talk Alvaro Videla will discuss how metaphor help us understand the world of computers, a world that didn’t exist a mere 80 years ago. How do metaphor influence the way we structure code, or design algorithms and data structures? Do we solve problems in our discipline based on what metaphors are part of our arsenal?
Alvaro Videla is a former RabbitMQ Core Dev and the Co-Author of book "RabbitMQ in Action". Hewas born in the Switzerland of the Americas and now lives in the Uruguay of Europe, where he currently works as a lead Architect at Migros.
