Session 1

Title: How do you create a great environment for developers? - 5 things we learned along the Jemstep journey

In 2016 a small South-African startup with 18 employees in total was acquired by Invesco, an investment management company with $930 billion Assets Under Management.

Two years later, and Jemstep has grown from a team of 18 people to about 90, spread across 4 continents.

Along the way we created a squad to focus solely on "Developer Productivity".

This is what we are learning. We hope some of it may be useful in your teams as well.

Facilitators: Andreas Pauley & Kevin Trethewey

Andreas Pauley joined a small startup called Jemstep in 2014 to get some Scala exposure.
Recently he started leading the newly-created Developer Productivity squad within Jemstep.
Andreas is a Functional Programming enthusiast. To prove it he founded Lambda Luminaries, a local functional programming user group.
These choices have inadvertently resulted in him being constantly surrounded by people way smarter than himself.

Kevin Trethewey joined Jemstep as Technical Director at the beginning of 2018, because he was excited about what was happening and wanted to be a part of it.
Prior to that he founded and managed Driven Alliance, a software development consultancy that was very active in supporting the local developer community.
Over the years Kevin has grown a reputation as an effective developer, coach and leader. There are still many days in which he fails at all three, but not always simultaneously.

Title: The Power of Social Media with PowerBI

Social Media data can be very powerful in growing your business, however this is BigData and not many companies know how to consume it and get the most benefit out of it. PowerBI has great features that allow you to use their templates to explore the data and get the most value out of it to make your marketing decisions. There will be a demo on how to set up a PowerBITwitter Campaign, and Google Analytics dashboards and how to use them.

Facilitator: Jeanne Combrinck

Jeanne Combrinck is a senior BI Developer at Wonga. She has always had a passion for programming and SQL. She has obtained her MCSE in BI and MCSE in Data Management and Analytics. Currently Jeanne is the Chapter Lead for SQLCape and BI Intellicape and she is the Brand Ambassador of Big Data Cape Town. When Jeanne is not coding she can be found spending time with her dogs or doing artsy things. If you are new to the group, read our monthly meeting FAQ to answer some common questions (http://www.meetup.com/DeveloperUG/pages/Monthly_Meetings/).
