Forget the Password! – Alim S. Gafar

Today, it isn't uncommon for users to have accounts on several hundred online services on the internet. Many website and apps use some form of usernames/password combination to authenticate users. To make it easier to remember how to access these accounts, some users recycle the same usernames and passwords. There are several options to address this problem, and passwordless authentication is a relatively recent addition, used by sites such as Zeit (https://zeit.co/signup), FirstBuild (https://cocreate.firstbuild.com/signup), Square Cash (https://cash.me/login), and Medium (https://medium.com) (if using the email option). In this talk, cover:

1. What is passwordless authentication and how it fits in with other common authentication schemes,

2. The pros and cons of passwordless authentication, and

3. How to implement a simple passwordless system in JavaScript.
