Is Traditional Politics In Terminal Decline?

Sep 9, 2014 · Greater London, United Kingdom

Peter Hain MP has agreed to host a meeting with us in the House of Commons to discuss the state of British Politics and whether it is so disconnected from citizens that it is fast losing trust and credibility.
Peter Hain was recently responsible for a Report about how MPs disengage themselves from citizens and how Labour and Lib Dems recruit many of their MPs in house through party professionals so as just to re-invent themselves. So it should be an interesting discussion.

Fears of a widening chasm between the major parties and the electorate have intensified since the success of UKIP in the European elections. A Guardian/ICM poll has revealed 56% of people think the biggest problem with Westminster is politicians breaking promises, while 44% are fed up with careerist MPs who "look and sound the same".

Caroline Dinenage will also be a speaker and Carioline has been an MP since 2010 and in April 2014 she was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Women.
In 2010, Gosport Constituency Conservative Association held a United States-style open primary pre-election, inviting all constituents, of whatever political affiliation, to complete a postal ballot to select a candidate. Caroline  won the Gosport primary.
Caroline is one of only two MPs who have been appointed in an open primary.

Also speaking will be John Mann MP who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bassetlaw since 2001. John believes in reform of our parliamentary and Party system and ran a primary in his Bassetlaw constituency in 2010 when he asked local Labour voters who they wanted to lead the party. He has called for the Labour party to introduce primaries as a more democratic and open method of selecting the right candidate to represent Labour in local selections.
