I want to share some tales from the ground of what it takes to build out design thinking teams at a large corporate. I also have some tales to tell about what doesn’t work!
Design thinking teams are about bringing the right people with the right mindset and skills together in a team to focus on delivering to a concept or key set of metrics that you know will change customer outcomes. The teams work in a cadence with regular prototyping to test concepts before feeding over to the delivery teams. The change in speed with which you can identify solutions to the problems before committing them to delivery, the confidence that the customer will like what you build and the speed to launch is hopefully eye-opening to those of us working in big organisations.
However, there are a number or pragmatic choices you have to make along the way and I will be happy to share some thoughts on which areas to hold steadfast on and which to bend to. I would also like to share with you the experience of standing up the teams in an environment that was waterfall/wagile heavy, bringing it into an organisation that is used to all planning and no ambiguity allowed, and most importantly truly shifting to a customer (desirability) focus mindset when human nature prefers talking feasibility + viability.
Bio: Liz Blink
A born and bred academic who asks why at every opportunity. This drives me to keep the needs of the customer in focus for all that we do and for all that I ask others to do. I have fallen in love with product management because it challenges the individual in the role and the company when they choose the right individual. It is neither a place for complacency or acceptance. It is a place for dreaming the dream and understanding where the day-to-day can take you... and then it is rising above and asking for the dream anyway.
