Geraint Davies MP has agreed to host a meeting in the House of Commons on TTIP agreement between the EU and the US that could adversely affect our public services, our food quality, our privacy and our democracy. And much of it is done in secret.
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is a series of trade negotiations being carried out mostly in secret between the EU and US. As a bi-lateral trade agreement, TTIP is about reducing the regulatory barriers to trade for big business, things like food safety law, environmental legislation, banking regulations and the sovereign powers of individual nations.
Apart of that agreement relates to the rules for Investor-State Dispute Settlements (ISDS) that will empower multinationals to sue democratically elected governments for passing laws which threaten their profits and this could mean shareholders not voters making key decisions thus reducing democratic accountability.
Geraint Davies is the (MP) for Swansea West. Previously, Davies was the MP for Croydon Central from 1997 to 2005. He had also served as Leader of Croydon Borough Council.
Geraint Davies’ Bill - The International Trade Agreement Scrutiny Bill would require scrutiny of, and enable amendments to, international trade agreements, including the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (the proposed EU-US Free trade deal) and the Investor State Dispute Settlements (which threatens to give multi-national companies the power to sue governments for laws they pass which protect consumers or workers and thereby affect future profit streams), by the European and UK Parliaments.
Sam Lowe heads up Friends of the Earth’s campaigning work on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and also spends some time working on resource use at a UK and EU level. He previously worked, in partnership with our international network, on exposing companies and financiers involved in land grabs in the global south.
Peter Grant MP is one of the newly elected Scottish Nationalist MPs and has a professional qualification in public sector finance and has been a councillor in Glenrothes since 1992. He served for 5 years as leader of Fife Council and is still leader of the SNP group. He has a strong track record as a local political campaigner, from the anti poll tax campaign of the 1980’s to the recent campaign against the local school closure programme. He is currently sitting on the European Scrutiny Committee.
