Wikipedia says that DevOps is a set of processes, methods and systems for communication, collaboration and integration between departments for Development (Applications/Software Engineering), Technology Operations and Quality Assurance (QA). Others say that DevOps is an elitist sysadmin club to rebrand an existing problem. Does it solve real problems? Regardless, an increasing number of companies are employing DevOps tools to help facilitate continuous integration, automated testing, and configuration management.
This event is for Devs who op, Ops who dev... and QA folks.
UPDATE: I sent a hundred or so surveys out to attendees and other members of the local community asking what sort of focus people would like to see for our first DevOps event. Among the most requested topics were open source configuration management tools.
It is good fortune that representatives for three of the leading configuration management tools (bcfg2, Chef, and Puppet) in Austin on the same day.
Jeff McCune of Puppet Labs will be on hand to take us through a deep dive into Puppet. It is a happy coincidence that Jeff already happened to be in Austin this week giving training on Puppet.
Matt Ray, Evangelist for Opscode and a fellow Austinite, will walk us through the basics of Chef.
During my last several visits to the Bay Area, an increasing number of folks are talking about bcfg2. By another happy coincidence, Sol Jerome, one of the primary developers of Bcfg2, lives near Austin. When he heard about the event, he contacted me asking if he could present on bcfg2.
Elysium is a pretty big space. If you want to take a break from the presentations, you can grab a drink and chat in the bar area. Elysium does not have a food menu, so we'll be making arrangement for catering. This event is free. Whether you decide to purchase lunch is up to you.
We still have a bit of time open for lightning talks. If you'd like to present, send me a note at email@example.com. Ideally, I'd like the presentations to follow the theme of SCM tools.
Hope to see you there!
