You will leave Nick's session with practical tools for going from business case to backlog in a way that gets us out of the building and validating hypotheses with real customers.
From Business Opportunity to Backlog (or where do user stories come from?)
Agile and Scrum can be an excellent way to deliver “value” faster to the market whilst adapting to change. The product backlog is a list of user stories, prioritised by decreasing business and customer “value”. But where does the idea of “value” come from in the first place, and how can we make sure, as Product Managers and Product Owners that we are consistently getting it delivered?
1) Most business opportunities imply a solution to a customer problem, yet don’t necessarily provide enough information to develop a full product?
2) Agile / Scrum requires that the Product Owner take this business opportunity and break it down into smaller, prioritised user stories that will facilitate a conversation with development teams.
3) The product backlog is a list of these user stories, prioritized by decreasing business and customer value.
4) What is not always clear is how “value” was attributed to these stories in the first place. Using the Brainmates Idea Pad we will re-frame the way that we look at user stories to ensure that we are solving the customer problems that will deliver the highest value to the customer and the business.
