Are you interested in porting Firefox OS to a specific device? Have you ever been curious about how ports are made, and how to put Firefox OS on an Android device? Do you want to help improve an existing device port? Join us to learn about how device porting works, and get help from a few porting engineers on the Firefox OS engineering team. We’re especially looking for people who want to work on creating new ports or improve the existing ports for a few devices in particular: LG G3, LG G4, Moto G 2015, Moto X, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, ZTE Open C, Sony Xperia Z1 and Z1 Compact. However, any Android device with KitKat support should be possible to port Firefox OS to.
Warning! Porting a mobile operating system to a device is not a trivial task! You will spend many hours getting set up before the meetup, and you should expect to spend many more hours afterwards making sure all the various hardware capabilities are functional.
The goal of the meetup is to get you started along the path to porting Firefox OS to a device, and to be able to ask questions of the porting engineers on the Firefox team, and to know where to ask questions afterward. A fully functional port takes a long time, so don’t expect to leave with your device running Firefox OS immediately.
• Device to port Firefox OS to - please choose one of the devices listed above!
• Mac or Linux laptop.
• Familiarity with Linux or Mac command line build tools and environment.
• Install the Firefox OS build pre-requisites: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS/Firefox_OS_build_prerequisites
• Read the existing porting documentation and begin the process BEFORE you attend the event: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Developing_Firefox_OS/Porting. Please do a build of a Nexus device such as Nexus 5 even if you do not have the device - no device is required for those builds, but it will verify your environment works correctly.
