The debate around faith schools is a very real one for many people and especially humanists and those of faith. There are very strongly held views on both sides. So we are planning to hold a debate on this on the motion -
“ Faith Schools harm diversity rather than promote it.”
We will running this Debate in partnership with the Central London Debating Society, who we have successfully worked with before. We will use the normal procedures of debate with a concluding vote on the motion.
The proposers will be Jason Maude, a regional co-ordinator for the Bahai faith and Sharon Nayyar, who is a solicitor, community activist and founder of Enfield Debaters. Opposing the motion will be Benjamin Gray, a Jewish barrister and a defender of faith schools and Mustafa Al Mansur who is Chair of the Association of Muslim Governors. There will be plenty of time for debate contributions from the floor.
The argument over faith schools often focus around the view, on one hand, that in a secular society, faith schools segment society making multi cultural dialogue more difficult and on the other hand that creating and supporting faith schools helps to create the building blocks that make cross cultural dialogue more possible and meaningful.
These are both reasoned arguments but which is right? This debate will let us all explore this more deeply. This debate is also part of a package of events and activities that we have been and will hold on the changing mosaic of multi cultural Britain and how we can all learn to accommodate each other.
