Newcastle, 30 March – 31 March 2020

The Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE) has partnered with the University of Newcastle's Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER) to deliver our 1st CRC CARE International Symposium on Microplastics. This highly anticipated 2-day event will focus on the latest developments in detection, fate and transport, risk assessment, clean-up, and regulation of emerging contaminants, with a focus on microplastics. It will bring together world-renowned experts and leaders from academia, government, the regulatory community, consultants and site owners.     

Day 1 will include presentations by some of the world's foremost microplastics experts. Topics include:

  • sources and characteristics of microplastics as well as a range of other emerging contaminants
  • how regulators, contaminated site owners and their advisors can deal with this growing problem.

Day 2 will include lively panel discussions on research gaps, regulatory development, chemistry and analytics, toxicology and risk, and clean-up.

Symposium outline

Day 1 – Presentations on:

  • Policy
  • Analytical techniques and approaches
  • Risks  environmental and human
  • Clean-up.

Day 2 – Panel discussions on:

  • Research gaps
  • Regulatory development  
  • Chemistry and analytics 
  • Toxicology and risk
  • Clean-up.


  • Early bird registration fees AUD$325 (ex GST)  ends on 15/12/2019 
  • Standard registration fees AUD$350 (ex GST)
  • Late registration fees AUD$375 (ex GST)

The registration fees will be applicable for Day1 only. Day 2 will be free to all participants who registered for day 1.  

Refund policy

Attendees can receive a refund up to 7 days before the event start date. Admin fee of $100 will apply.


The symposium will be fully catered including morning and afternoon tea and lunch.
