Edge computing represents the next frontier of cloud, where workloads and data are no longer confined to centralized data centers and, instead, can be placed in close proximity to where they are needed—one hop away from the end user or device. Edge computing at scale requires a massive investment in edge data centers, deploying terawatts of compute in a highly-distributed fashion via micro data centers integrated into the built environment, such as at the base of cell towers. In this talk Cole Crawford, founder and CEO of Vapor IO, will offer an overview of edge computing, explain how the highly-distributed nature of edge computing will become a perfect environment for distributed blockchain, then demonstrate how blockchain can be used for mobile device connection routing at the edge.
Cole Crawford is CEO and founder of Vapor IO, an Austin-based innovator in edge computing and edge data centers. He was previously the founding executive director of the Open Compute Project and is a co-founder of OpenStack. He is a founding board member of the Open19 Foundation and has been a thought leader in data center technology for over a decade. He and Vapor IO are currently leading industry efforts to deliver cloud computing to the edge of the network using Vapor IO’s patented hardware designs, as well as the company’s software portfolio for autonomous data center operations and application telemetry.
