DigitalOcean Amsterdam: The April Edition - Kubernetes

Apr 25, 2018 · Amsterdam, Netherlands

We're back for another DigitalOcean Amsterdam meetup. This month we have two speakers focusing on Kubernetes. Up first, Pietro will give us a introduction to the basic concepts for those who are new to Kubernetes. After the break We've got Dimitar and Chandrika talking about how these use Kubernetes to manage and deploy microservices at Picnic.

We'll stick to our tried and tested formula - ice cold drinks on arrival including a selection of beer, wines and softdrinks. There will be finger snacks to keep your energy levels up. After the final talk (at around 8:45/9 ish) there will be pizza to munch on more beers to sip on while you chat to peoples and relax. The whole evening is a chilled out affair.
We try to cater for everyone, so there will be meaty, vegetarian and gluten free pizza but if you have any special dietary requirements, send me an email and I'll try to accommodate them.

If you can't make it, We will do a livestream at

Pietro Bongiovanni (Fixico) - An introduction to the basic concepts of Kubernetes

An introduction to the basic concepts of Kubernetes: all you need to know to navigate pods, services, ingresses on your own, to understand why it is one of the fastest growing open source projects on GitHub, and to help you build, test and deploy applications from a simple local minikube instance to a multi-node fully distributed cluster using your favourite cloud service provider.

Pietro is a software engineer at Fixico where he does back-end development and DevOps, and is an undergraduate student in Computer Engineering at Politecnico di Torino where I am struggling to get my degree.

Dimitar Nedev & Chandrika Parimoo (Picnic) - Best practices for orchestrating a multi-site deployment with Kubernetes

Getting microservices up and running can be a daunting task for some. There are a million things that could go wrong. While there is no definitive guideline for deploying and managing the microservices, containerisation and popular container orchestration platforms like kubernetes have transformed the play field for running microservices. In this talk we will cast some light on some patterns that can be followed for deploying services in Kubernetes for speedy and stable delivery of services which we found while building the container platform at Picnic. For those interested in the technologies we are going to talk about, Picnic uses AWS, Java, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, New Relic, Scalyr, Vault and Travis among others.

Dimitar is the Lead Data Infrastructure Engineer and Chandrika is the Lead DevOps Engineer at Picnic. They have been developing the backend and data infrastructure and undertook the containerisation initiative to support the expansion of Picnic services to multiple markets.

The provisional structure is as follows:

- 6:30 - Doors open - Grab a drink and get a seat

- 7:00 - Brief introduction

- 7:10 - Pietro Bongiovanni (Fixico) - An introduction to the basic concepts of Kubernetes

- 7:55 - A small interlude - Chance to grab another drink and toilet break

- 8:00 - Dimitar Nedev & Chandrika Parimoo (Picnic) - Best practices for orchestrating a multi-site deployment with Kubernetes

- 8:45 - Closing remarks then pizza and socialising
