Things come full circle: from real life, to digital, back to real. But the future doesn't repeat the past, it only rhymes. What are the patterns, trends, and designs shaping the future of In Real Life (IRL) experiences? How is technology improving our face time (if at all)? In this session of Designers + Geeks, we'll feature talks from creative professionals working to create brilliant IRL experiences.

JESS KESSIN | Design Strategist & Educator, Stanford d.School

Jess is a product designer, design strategist, entrepreneur and educator with a deep passion for Universal Design and creating products and services that are accessible to ALL people. Her superpower is pinpointing a need to design and implement a new paradigm. Jess always infuses her work with meaning. She started a toy company based in Universal Design to help all children engage in accessible play. Most recently she established three unprecedented design practices at Capital One, including Design Strategy for the credit card business, Physical Experience Design and Data Visualization. Jess spent 7 years teaching design and engineering to undergraduates in Stanford’s Product Design Program and since 2012 has been actively teaching Design Thinking at the Stanford D.School.

STEPHANIE THOMA | IRL Connection Enthusiast & Workshop Facilitator

Networking for Introverts

Do you feel anxious at the thought of networking? Do you wish you felt more comfortable meeting new people, but feel like networking is too quick and shallow for you to do it right? Do you feel misunderstood, coming off as unfriendly without meaning to? If this sounds familiar, you won't want to miss this lightning talk.

Adapted from the interactive 90-minute Networking for Introverts workshop, this talk has been designed to address those specific concerns and more.

Stephanie Thoma is a workshop facilitator, writer and international speaker whose mission is to help people connect more authentically in real life. Currently serving as the Director of PR for the Young Professionals of San Francisco and TEDx SF Community Lead, she has made a career out of networking. Stephanie has attended more than 300 networking events since 2016, and in 2018 produced and hosted over 100 events in San Francisco. Her latest workshop, Creating Female Friendly Workplaces, is now available for startup and corporate bookings. Stephanie has presented to audiences at General Assembly, Quilt, SF Girl Bosses, Venture Cafe and more, and is excited to share space with the Designer + Geeks community.

GABRIELLE GUTHRIE | Designer Co-Founder, Moxxly

Gabrielle is the Designer Co-Founder of Moxxly, where she leads a team making boss products for women, starting with a hassle-free breast pump accessory kit. She holds a Masters in Design from Stanford University.
