Talk details: The focus of my talk will be to highlight the emerging role of data science in the world of investments. Quants have long dominated investments and trading, and it appears data scientists are the new quants. My presentation will include a quick background on current challenges in traditional finance. I will then talk about a few examples of new alternative data sets that could be potentially used by data scientists at hedge funds to generate 'alpha'. The last and the main part will be to walk through a more detailed example of the application of NLP in analyzing corporate earning calls to generate buy or sell signals.

  • Champaign-Urbana Data Science User Group

The aim of the user group is to build a community of interest around data science to foster learning, collaboration, and networking. The group will serve both students and professionals to bridge the gap between the analytical sciences and practical applications of industry. Anyone is invited and included, from undergraduate students (or younger!) to seasoned professionals. There is no requirement for admission, only an interest in learning more about data science.
