Coronavirus vs COVID vs Brexit vs Porn: Google Trends with Python & Power BI

Jan 26, 2022 · London, United Kingdom

'The more impersonal the conditions, the more honest people will be.' Seth Stevens-Davidowitz, Data scientist and author, 2017.

Google - as our closest confidante - is a gold mine of data on people's curiosities and anxieties during any timeframe over the past 15 years. Getting the hang of its Trends data API and the stats retrievable from it can be the key to unearthing insight into what the cultural and political zeitgeists were at a given time, or to knowing whether people prefer Power BI to Tableau or Messi to Salah.

Ned will present a detailed 45-minute session on how Python and Power BI can be used to build an accurate and varied dashboard from Google Trends data, showing how the UK public's search terms about the Coronavirus pandemic have changed over 2 years. As searches for COVID, vaccines and Omicron have fluctuated strongly over 21 months, it will also uncover the search term that has been unwittingly consistent over this time, and how this phenomenon is critical to working with Google Trends data efficiently.
