Communitech Academy: Data Science Fundamentals - Spring 2020

May 7 - 8, 2020 · Kitchener, Canada

This two-day fundamentals program will give you a comprehensive overview of applied data science. It’s hands-on and use-case driven by design, so you will learn the concepts of data collection, data wrangling, and predictive modeling as well as how to build an end-to-end data science project.

What you’ll learn:

  • Common Data Science use cases
  • Data science toolbox
  • Data collection and exploration
  • The lifecycle of an end-to-end data science project
  • Basic data manipulation using Python
  • Classification models for sentiment analysis
  • Information visualization using an open-source dashboard tool
  • An introduction to machine learning
  • Model evaluation, interpretation, and presentation

Who is it for?
This program is best for anyone interested in exploring the fundamentals of data science.

Tech requirements:
For this bootcamp, we will be using Google Cloud.
You’ll need to bring your own laptop* for use, including:

  • Chrome browser
  • Gmail account
  • Ability to connect to the internet using an open WiFi connection

*While there will be limited charging stations available around the perimeter of the room for use during breaks and lunch, we strongly recommend bringing your laptop fully charged, as there won’t be power available for you at your classroom seat.

How big is the class?
The class will be capped at 30 and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration* fees:

  • Employees of startup and mid-size Communitech Member companies: $ 750
  • Employees of enterprise Communitech Member companies & Communitech associate member companies: $850
  • Non-Members: $975

This program includes coffee to kick-start your day, as well as lunch on both days.

Please register with your business email address, as this is used to validate Communitech membership.

*Note: To encourage diversity of thought in the classroom, we cap participant enrolment at a maximum of three employees per company, except for those individuals that are members of our Innovation Lab teams. If you would like more people from your organization to benefit from this program, let us know and we can talk about a potential team session.

Vinny Nguyen is a machine learning engineer currently working at Beamdata, a Toronto-based AI consulting company. Coming from a web development background, Vinny transitioned into a Machine Learning engineer role by working closely with clients on machine learning projects, model deployment, and building data pipelines. Vinny also has a strong passion for teaching.

Getting to Communitech.
The parking lot at 151 Charles Street West, Kitchener, is limited and is a shared visitor lot for all tenants in the Tannery building. It is for short term use only, up to two hours. For alternative parking lot info, check out this map to find out how to get downtown and where to park. Or, skip the need to park altogether. Use the GRT EasyGo trip planner to find your best route on the ION light rail or bus services, which conveniently make regular, nearby stops.
