When employees in your company describe how they feel about collaborating, would they say it’s like:
• Playing for the Golden State Warriors basketball team (it’s exciting and often leads to amazing results)?
• Eating broccoli (sometimes we need it, but try to do it as little as possible)?
It’s hard to blame people who think of collaboration as ‘eating their broccoli.’ They see it this way because of frustrating past experiences. The way to change their minds is to change their experiences.
Some of the most successful firms in Silicon Valley use an approach for fostering collaboration that Thea Spitzer coalesced into her book, The Power of Collaboration (Career Press, 2018).
Spitzer, a management consultant for nearly 30 years who specializes in helping companies thrive and increasing employee effectiveness, will share hints to guide you and your engineering organization, small or large, to even greater success through better collaboration. (Just because you work in Silicon Valley doesn’t mean you automatically know these secrets. But you will after this talk!)
Thea Singer Spitzer, Principal of Critical Change LLC, has been a consultant, strategic advisor, and coach to executives, leaders, and staff at Fortune 500s, mid-sized firms and start-ups for 30 years (including 16 years with Microsoft).
Her expertise includes guiding companies to new levels of success by helping teams who see the world differently to coalesce and achieve amazing results. People from diverse fields tend to think and act differently. For instance, the work, thought processes, and goals of Engineering and Product Management teams often look dissimilar unless we create interconnections between them. Thea partners to build those links so individuals and teams can achieve that special sauce of working seamlessly.
Thea earned her Ph.D. in Organizational Systems from Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center and her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.
