Cloud Native Databases: self-healing and auto-scaling SQL and NoSQL DBs

May 10, 2016 · Wallisellen, Switzerland

Directions:

- From the train station "Wallisellen", head south into Richtistrasse.
- After ~250m, you reach an area with 5 large office buildings (also Microsoft is in one of those).

"Stateful Containers - the next challenge in microservices"

Crate is an open-source SQL database that is highly available, scalable and based on a shared-nothing masterless architecture, enabling significant performance increases over competing solutions. “Crate´s simplicity and masterless architecture make it a perfect match for containerized environments,” Solomon Hykes, founder and CTO of Docker. “I expect to see it widely deployed as more developers adopt the new microservices paradigm.”

Part 2, Michael Müller, Container Solutions

Demo time: Running MySQL and InfluxDB cloud-native style

In the last meetup, we introduced 2 different approaches how to operate self-healing, stateful services like databases. This time, we want to demo these two approaches:

Demo 1: The Autopilot pattern in action: Running MySQL in container orchestators like Kubernetes or Mesos

Demo 2: Running a self-healing InfluxDB cluster on Mantl.io using a custom-built Mesos framework

Microservices are the result of combining architectural ideas from lightweight SOA and DDD (Domain Driven Design), organisational approaches like DevOps and Agile Software Development, and new technical possibilities like Containers and Programmable Infrastructure. Implementing Microservices promises faster time to market, more scalable and less coupled architectures, and autonomy of individual development teams.  This meetup group is for everyone wanting to discuss the real-world challenges implementing M
