Classification, Perceptron, and AdaBoost

Oct 28, 2009 · New York, United States of America

For our second meeting we'll be covering some machine learning basics. We'll talk a little bit about classification and cover in detail how to implement the Perceptron classifier. Finally, I'll touch on the topic of boosting and AdaBoost which can improve the accuracy of the perceptron classifier. The Wikipedia page on Perceptron provides a good introduction. For AdaBoost, Freund and Schapire's paper "A Short Introduction to Boosting" is a good read.

Please read both before the meeting. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, attempt to implement one or both algorithms in your programming language of choice. We can cover code and questions in the meeting. Also, please note that I've changed the start time to 7 PM. It seems that people had trouble making the earlier time. See you on the 28th!
