Citizenship, Trafficking & Modern Slavery

Mar 12, 2015 · Greater London, United Kingdom

Following our meeting in the House of Commons in 2014 we are planning a working session to discuss the problem of human trafficking further, consider different aspects of this problem and see what we as citizens can do to make a difference. We will be running the meeting in both a presentation and workshop style together with the New Europeans. The London Debate Network will also be involved as will students from London Metropolitan University.

The meeting will start with a presentation by Matt Daw from PhotoVoice.  They have recently run a photo exhibition on human trafficking and these photos will also be exhibited at this meeting.  Matt Daw will talk about the exhibition and the human tragedy captured through photography.

We will then break up into five tables to discuss different aspects of the problem and then we will change tables once so you all have a chance to discuss two of the following areas, where we have some really good facilitators for these groups and these are
Trafficking and The Sex Trade. This will be facilitated by Tatiana Jarden who is the Director of the Human Trafficking Foundation - a UK-based charity which grew out of the work of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Human Trafficking. HTF was created in order to support and add value to the work of the many charities and agencies operating to combat human trafficking in the UK. You can find out more at http://www.humantraffickingfoundation.org/
Trafficking and Forced Labour. This will be facilitated by Amy Jasper from Stop The Trafik - a global movement of activists around the world who passionately give their time and energy to build resilient communities and prevent human trafficking. You can find out more at http://www.stopthetraffik.org/
Trafficking and Domestic Servitude. This will be facilitated byCatherine Kenny of Kalayaan  a small London based charity which works to provide practical advice and support to, as well as campaign with and for, the rights of migrant domestic workers in the UK.• Social Reporting & Human Trafficking. You can find out more about it at http://www.kalayaan.org.uk/
Citizenship, Free Movement & Trafficking. This will be facilitated by Roger Casale from The New Europeans who campaign for the right to live and work anywhere in the EU but realise that free movement of labour has to be managed to prevent tragedies like human trafficking. You can find out more about their work at http://neweuropeans.net/  And
Human Trafficking & Social Reporting. This will be facilitated by Matt Daw from PhotoVoice who develop social reporting through photography across the globe and will be exhibiting some of their work at this meeting. You can find out more about them at http://www.photovoice.org/

We hope to end the meeting by looking at what we can do to lobby MPs and Government. We hope to have a short presentation on the new Modern Slavery Bill, which will look to establish an anti-slavery commissioner as well as outline new child exploitation offenses and harsher penalties for traffickers. In this presentation we will ask what can we do as citizens to expose and stop modern day slavery.
The New Europeans exist to promote the value of EU citizenship, ensuring that New Europeans and new generations of Europeans have a voice, in the unfolding debate about the future of Europe and about Britain’s place in the EU.
The London Debate Network (LDN) is a free meetup group for people interested in public speaking and current affairs.
