Chicago Mobile Meetup: Cross-Platform Development Panel

Sep 22, 2011 · Chicago, United States of America

We have a great topic this month, one that has generated a lot of interest, questions and opinions over the past several months at our meetups.  Cross-platform mobile development is getting a lot of press lately -- both good and bad.  There are many tools out in the marketplace that promise to "build once, deploy everywhere".  But which ones really deliver?

How do I choose the right one?
Is the overall experience better than a native app?
Are they viable in the long term?
What are some pitfalls to watch out for?

These are just a few of the many questions on everyone's mind, and they are questions that our expert panelists will be asked.  We'll provide a moderator to seed some questions and keep the panel discussion lively.   The goal is to teach and provide lessons learned and experiences using these tools and developing for multiple mobile platforms.  Here is a quick bio for each of our panelists and moderator: J Schwan (moderator):  J is the Founder and President of Solstice Consulting as well as Solstice's product development studio, Bottega Sol. J has over 15 years of experience architecting and managing mission-critical initiatives for world-renowned enterprises. Under his leadership, Solstice has lead the industry in helping enterprises understand, embrace and adapt to emerging technologies. In addition to helping his teams build great products for Solstice's customers, J enjoys speaking about emerging technology topics at many educational institutions, technology conferences and focus groups. Brock Henderson:  Brock is co-founder and partner of the design studio Paper Tower and the mobile games company Crawl Space Games. With seven years of working with Fortune 500 companies, such as Motorola and Coke, to small non-profits, he has a wide range of branding, design, and development experience. Being both a designer and developer, he is able to create a fluid branding experience between mediums. Currently, much of Brock's attention is occupied with the study of game design and creating fun mobile experiences. Michael An:  Mike is a Mobile Applications Architect for Solstice Consulting, specializing in enterprise mobile solutions and strategic consulting.  He has extensive technical experience in the integration of mobile application platforms with Dynamics AX, Dynamics NAV and legacy systems and ERP systems.  Mike’s mobile architecture and implementation experience spans the areas of mobile field sales, mobile credit card processing, mobile CRM, mobile sales force automation, and mobile inventory management on all the major platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, Windows Embedded and Adobe Flex Mobile. Kevin McMahon:  Kevin is a software architect with Redpoint Technologies and has done native and cross platform development for iOS and Android. The cross platform framework and tools he has used are MonoTouch and Mono for Android. He has found that these frameworks are particularly attractive to companies that have a large investment in .Net technologies both in terms of developers and infrastructure. Jeff Hamilton:  Jeff has worked in a variety marketing roles of delivering creative, strategic, and tactical marketing leadership and programs for business to developer/designer organizations.   Jeff has led marketing and sales organizations in both multinational conglomerates and innovative startups.   Most recently Jeff served as VP Marketing for Red Foundry, a provider of a mobile app development platform growing social media awareness and engagement within the developer community. Feel free to email me your questions ahead of time and/or tweet them to me at @greggwheeler and use hashtag #chimobile. We'll be live-tweeting from the event, so feel free to submit any questions live during it as well.  Looking forward to seeing everyone there. - Gregg
