Changemakers GlobalNet21 and Africa: Challenges and Opportunities for Innovation Sign up

Nov 25, 2013 · Greater London, United Kingdom

Our guest is John Dada on a rare visit to the UK. John is director of Fantsuam Foundation. Its mission is to eliminate poverty and disadvantage through integrated development programs. Its goal is to be the most effective model of integrated rural development in West Africa.
John Dada and Pamela McLean collaborate under the name "Dadamac" which brings together two very different and distant communities and cultures. John is based in rural Nigeria, where Fantsuam Foundation serves an area far beyond the reach of the Internet and mobile phones. He deals on a daily basis with the challenges of rural poverty.  He is also active in many forums at a local and international level. Pamela lives in London, her "community" and her networking activities are rich and varied, partly in London and partly online. Dadamac brings together the networks of John Dada and Pamela McLean, in ways that enable innovation to happen. They will share past successes (and failures) and future hopes, challenges and opportunities for innovation in Africa.

Dadamac understands about the challenges separating our two communities. Much of our work involves breaking down barriers of ignorance and misinformation. Effective two-way communication and equal respect on both sides are at the heart of all we do. Our work at a distance is made possible through the Internet service at Fantsuam, which was established (as a social business) as part of FF's community services. John and Pamela have been working together for approximately ten years, facing the challenges and demonstrating the opportunities that are possible when we draw on the best of both cultures.

This session will explore the realities of community development, illustrated by work at Fantsuam (and relevant much more widely). It is a great opportunity to check assumptions and hype about development against what really works and what doesn't and why. There will be time for questions and discussions of a practical nature including ideas for future collaborations.
