Cascading failure or how I accidentally turned millions of iPhones into a botnet

Oct 1, 2019 · Sofia, Bulgaria

Join us for a talk by our Director of Engineering Douglas Gresham on cascading failures and how to avoid it.

TALK: Scalability has been a hot topic in software engineering for many years now, but often what we talk about is how systems handle success and growth - not about the new failure modes scale introduces. This talk will walk through a war story of cascading failure - a situation where the failure of one part triggers failure of others - and the lessons hard learned about how to build and run scalable systems resiliently.

BIO: Douglas Gresham ( has been learning from mistakes building distributed software for 14 years. Before joining Skyscanner he was at Google for 10 years working on search, social, ads and maps; and at Facebook for 1 year building store visit ads.

As usual, there will be pizza and beer at the end of the talk and we're looking forward to discussing other cases of cascading failures. Those are always fun.
