Career in Tech Week, Day 3: How to think like a programmer - lessons in pro...

Oct 2, 2019 · Lisboa, Portugal

How to think like a programmer - lessons in problem-solving + attitude

If you’re interested in learning how to code, you may have read this quote before:

“Everyone in this country should learn to program a computer, because it teaches you to think.” — Steve Jobs

You probably also wondered what does it mean, exactly, to think like a programmer? And how do you do it??

Essentially, it’s all about a more effective way for problem-solving.

The misconception

Doing Le Wagon is intense. The learning curve is steep. And frequently, our students misunderstand where the struggle lies. They think the hairy bit is actually writing code - learning the syntax - but the real battle lies in the mindset of the student, their problem-solving abilities, and the attitude they have around learning.

Why the leap into tech is scary

Learning how to code is a big commitment. And oftentimes, the day to day work of a programmer is somewhat hazy for us outsiders, which makes the world of development that much more of a leap of faith for those of us who are considering entering.

It's all about practice

And many of us that don’t have a mathematical or engineering background, see analytical thinking and problem solving as a God-Given-Talent. A skill you’re either born with or not. But here’s the thing, like almost everything in life, it’s all about practice.

The plan for the evening

We will start the evening with an introduction to problem-solving frameworks. Once we’ve given you a taste of what it means to think like a developer (skipping the code part), we will invite a panel of developers to discuss the attitude one needs to thrive in a programming career.
