While we are shoring up the details of All Hands on DevOps #9 we can now confirm the next date and location.
We are happy to be heading to the shiny new offices of the newly formed SapientRazorfish at Spitalfields Market.
The rough agenda for the evening is:
18:30 - Doors open, refreshments and networking
19:05 - Valentin Fadeev, DevOps Engineer at Student.com. Introducing Consul into an existing micro-service environment.
Valentin is the DevOps engineer at Student.com's London office. He supports the development team by creating and maintaining automated, resilient and reproducible infrastructure on AWS, implementing deployment workflows, achieving short release cycles. Prior to joining Student.com he used to work as a DevOps/Data Engineer in the ad-tech sector.
Consul is a powerful tool combining a service discovery mechanism, health checking, key-value store and event propagation. Used efficiently it can help create a highly automated, easily configurable and transparent runtime for distributed application. In this talk we will take a look at the challenges of introducing Consul into a existing microservice-based architecture in a least disruptive way. We will also demonstrate a possible approach to building an immutable automatically converging Consul cluster on AWS.
19:40 - pizza, refreshments etc.
20:00 - Andrew Martin - DevOps Lead at UK Government. Insecure Containers? Continuous Defence Against Open Source Exploits.
Andrew is a DevOps Lead in the UK Government with a strong test-first engineering background gained developing and deploying high volume web applications. He is comfortable profiling and securing every tier of a bare metal or virtualized web stack and has battle-hardened experience delivering containerised solutions.
Open Source Software underpins the internet and many enterprises, but has repeatedly proven itself vulnerable to accident and tampering. High impact exploits lead us to question our unreserved trust in Open Source, and the wisdom of its proliferation is being questioned. As we fight to continuously secure millions of servers against these waves of attacks, have we found a crucial panacea in containers?
This talk examines the anatomy of major vulnerabilities with examples and live demos, demonstrates their applicability to containerised applications, and explores container native security tooling throughout the pipeline.
20:45 - networking, refreshments etc.
21:15 - On to a local watering hole, The Astronomer.
