HotDraw Revisited (with a Jasmine Test-Driven HTML5 Canvas using JSON to talk to Rails... How Else Would You Do It?)
In the late 80s, Kent Beck and Ward Cunningham came up with HotDraw (http://c2.com/cgi/wik..., a two-dimensional graphics framework for structured drawing editors, originally written in Smalltalk-80. Since then, many implementations have been created, and the principles applied in a lot of places. While a lot has been learned, the original HotDraw still outshines many of its successors.
Recently, RoleModel Software was asked to build a system to support educational innovators at the Friday Institute, including direct manipulation tasks to test and teach various mathematical concepts. The solution has evolved to include a HotDraw-like JavaScript approach to drawing on an HTML5 Canvas, interfacing with Rails to store and reproduce the state of tasks, with the JavaScript almost completely test driven using Jasmine.
We'll focus on how we made both the unit and acceptance tests of the highly-interactive, JavaScript intensive portions of the system work well and fast.

Ken Auer has over twenty years of experience in agile software development, being active in the successful development of object oriented software since 1985. He founded RoleModel Software in 1997 and began building the first Extreme Programming Software Studio™ based on his vision of apprentices, skilled journeyman, and software masters working together in an environment of continuous learning and collaboration to produce adaptable and robust software. Although Ken has been instrumental in building a large number of high quality working software systems over the years, he feels his biggest accomplishment has been the number of high integrity software developers he has helped grow.

Every software vendor knows they need to learn and be ready to deliver on Agile/Scrum.  This presents challenges with growing internal knowledge/understanding, gaining client alignment on the approach - and adapting traditional project roles into the roles required to deliver successfully on Agile/Scrum.  This presentation will be a first hand look our company's maiden voyage into Agile/Scrum - looking at what worked, what didn't work and what we've learned/applied to subsequent projects both for internal and external (client) delivery
