A Whirlwind Tour of the Java Virtual Machine

Mar 9, 2022 · Irvine, United States of America

This month, Vivek Haldar returns to give us an incredibly relevant talk: A Whirlwind Tour of the Java Virtual Machine! Come learn more about the heart of our platform.

6:30 Networking
7:00 Announcements, talk, and JetBrains raffle
8:30 Dinner, drinks, and more discussion

We have dinner just down the street at El Torito Grill: https://goo.gl/maps/tznTxgY6SrwKSDUk8

As participants in the big tent that is the Java ecosystem (and that includes languages like Groovy, Scala, Kotlin and many others), we often overlook the engine the underlies it all--the Java Virtual Machine. In this talk, we will look at the JVM instruction set, its architecture, the design considerations that went into it, its pitfalls and how it has evolved over the years.

Vivek Haldar has been programming for nearly two decades at all levels of the stack (the Linux kernel, large-scale backends for search and indexing, cluster management systems, virtual machines, Android apps, CRMs). He has a PhD in Computer Science from UC Irvine, and is currently a Staff Software Engineer at Google.

Welcome! This is a group for anyone interested in Java development. Meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month and include opportunities for networking as well as presentations on some topic of interest to Java developers. We meet for dinner/drinks afterward. Ray Tayek and Philip Yurchuk organize the meetings. We have online discussions in two places: The OCJUG mailing list: http://www.meetup.com/Orange-County-Java-Users-Group-OCJUG/messages/archive/ The OCJUG LinkedIn Group: http://www.l
